As we prepare to close our doors for the season on October 31st, I find myself sitting on a chilly morning, watching the last few trips drift downstream. It\u2019s been a quiet, contemplative week\u2014one that gives us space to reflect on how much has changed in such a short time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Beginning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It was May 2024 when John Gibson approached me with a question that would change everything: \u201cWould you be interested in taking over Downriver?\u201d<\/em> John\u2019s one important condition was that this remains a family business. That resonated with me. With my wife Margo, our kids, my niece, and their partners, we already had our own family. We believed we could honor what John built and keep that family spirit alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discovering What Family Really Means<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But as the season unfolded, something beautiful happened\u2014I discovered that this family was bigger than I had imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When our staff arrived\u2014many returning from previous years, some joining us for the first time\u2014I realized this group had become our extended Downriver family. We experienced the highs and lows together\u2014supporting each other through busy weekends, quiet weekdays, celebrating successes, and tackling challenges side by side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s when I truly understood what John meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Heart of Our Family: You<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

And then I met all of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of you have been coming here for 50 years\u2014since John first opened these doors in the 1970s. Others discovered this special place just this summer. Many fall somewhere in between, returning year after year for five, ten, or twenty years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You all know what makes Downriver special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you\u2019re seeking a getaway from daily life or an adventure with loved ones, this little corner of the world offers something truly unique. And that\u2019s when it hit me: Downriver isn\u2019t just a family business. Downriver IS a huge, vibrant family\u2014and you are all part of it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
